Dental Implants - Less Invasive than Ever
If you've previously decided against dental implants due to the risks and recovery times associated with implant dentistry, you owe it to yourself to schedule a dental implant consultation with Paul L. Michaelides, D.D.S., M.Sc.D.. Dr. Michaelides uses minimally invasive techniques including computer generated surgical guides which reduce surgical time and discomfort.
Anatomy of a Dental Implant
Aside from restoring your chewing capability and enhancing your smile, one of the greatest benefits of having a dental implant is that it replaces both your missing tooth and the root. A dental implant can be broken down into three basic components:
• Dental Implant Fixture – This part of the tooth implant resembles a tiny screw. The dental implant post is made of titanium so it can integrate with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. During the dental implant procedure, the dental implant fixture is first surgically placed, and then the patient is allowed several months to heal so the implant is stable before the dental implant crown is attached.
• Abutment –The abutment is a small metal post that connects the dental implant crown to the dental implant fixture.
• Tooth Restoration – The tooth restoration is the dental implant crown that attaches to the post. The restoration is usually made of porcelain and is formed to match the color and shape of your surrounding teeth. Patients that are missing multiple teeth can choose to have an implant-supported dental bridge or denture instead of multiple dental implant crowns.
Dr. Michaelides has placed over 1500 dental implants. The use of CAT scans and computer generated surgical guides allow for the placement of dental implants with greater precision and reduced risk. The entire dental implant treatment plan can be shown to you on a computer monitor, allowing you to see exactly where each implant will be placed and how it will affect your smile, bite, and chewing ability. Using the computer generated surgical guide and microsurgical technique, Dr. Michaelides is able to place your dental implants with quicker healing and reduced discomfort.
To ensure your comfort while he replaces your missing teeth, Dr. Michaelides offers oral conscious sedation dentistry. This form of sedation dentistry involves taking oral medications that sedate and relax you. In addition, oral conscious sedation allows more extensive procedures to be completed at one time if desired. When used in conjunction with minimally invasive microsurgical techniques for dental implants, Dr. Michaelides is able to offer more comfortable dental implant placement with less risk and faster recovery.
